Forty Years of the Computer Mouse- Will There be Forty More?

Perhaps your phone or your car keys come in first as to an object you pick up most in your life, but second may be in fact, your computer mouse. Unplug your mouse or take out the batteries. Take a minute and try to activate anything on your computer with out the mouse. It’s pretty difficult isn’t it? The invention of the Computer Mouse has been pretty revolutionary and so many computer mouse designs have been created and marketed as the next go-to gadget.
Computer Mouse Designs- The Good and the Bad
Sure the computer mouse function has stayed the same- direct access into a computer, but designs from one enormous button to teeny computer mice to large joy-stick like models have changed drastically. Some popular computer mouse models:

• Finger mouse
• Joy Stick
• Rolling Ball- trackball mouse
• Ergonomic mouse
• Touch pad

Will the computer mouse be around for another 40 years? Technology geeks think not. The computer mouse is ready for retirement and touch screens are taking over. If you use a laptop with a track pad or a touch pad for a computer mouse pad, you will already have been practicing for the touch screen revolution.

No-doubt you have used a touch screen already, maybe in fact, several times today- be it at the bank atm, grocery store checkout or perhaps you work in an industry that uses touch screen technology for a point of service to enter in information, like at a restaurant or auto shop. The iconic Apple iPhone, no doubt is the start of touch screen phenomenon, although touch screen technology has been around since the 60s. Now that more everyday objects are beginning to have touch screens, the cost of the technology is decreasing, allowing for more advances in touch screens. For example, the Microsoft touch screen coffee table “Surface”, allows people to grab and pull images, text and other functions has quickly become top buzz, if you have seen the most recent James Bond, then you will know what I am talking about.

Some people argue that the human hand is far too clumsy, and for some people, using touch technology is not working for them, they need more than a glass or plastic screen to push. So what’s next?

The Computer Mouse is “so last year,” and touch screens are becoming the norm. So what is next? Well, motion detection technology and even “thought provoked” motion sensors are the next big wave of possibilities for computer communication. As with all new technology, it will be costly at first and hard to find and then suddenly, everywhere. I wouldn’t recommend throwing away every computer mouse you own however- it’s like switching from rotary to wireless phones in the 90s- if the power ever went out, you had to find the plug in phone. Meaning- see what happens, you may not be able to afford the computer monitor that comes with the touch technology. You may have the old retired mouse for another 5- 10 years- which is archaic in technology terms.
